8 Sunnah To Do When Wake Up

It was narrated by Abu Huraira in Bukhari that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)  said, "Satan puts three knots at the back of the head of any of you if he is asleep. On every knot he reads and exhales the following words, 'The night is long, so stay asleep.' When one wakes up and remembers Allah, one knot is undone; and when one performs ablution, the second knot is undone, and when one prays the third knot is undone and one gets up energetic with a good heart in the morning; otherwise one gets up lazy and with a mischievous heart." [Bukhari (1142)]

  • The first knot is untied when you remember Allah by making the dua
  • The second knot is untied when you performed wudu
  • The third knot is untied when you performed salat

Whoever follows these 3 habits will have energy and will be in a good mood. If the individual does not do the three things mentioned above, he will be lazy and in bad spirits.

What One Should Do And Say When Wake Up

  1. Sit And Wipe Your Face With Your Hands:

It is narrated in Sahih Bukhari that when the Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) woke up, he would sit up and rub the effects of sleep from his face with his hands. He then recited the last ten verses of Surah Al-Imran (The Family Of Imran) and made wudu.

  1. The Supplications To Say When Wake Up
اَلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ

“Praise is to Allah Who gives us life after He has caused us to die and to Him is the return.”

“There is none worthy of worship but Allah alone, Who has no partner, His is the dominion and to Him belongs all praise, and He is able to do all things. Glory is to Allah. Praise is to Allah. There is none worthy of worship but Allah. Allah is the Most Great. There is no might and no power except by Allah's leave, the Exalted, the Mighty. My Lord, forgive me.”

Benefits of reciting the latter dua when waking up:

  • He will be forgiven
  • If he supplicates, his supplication will be answered
  • If he makes wudu and pray, is prayer will be accepted
  1. Use Miswak/Siwak

It is mentioned in Bukhari that Hudhaifa narrated that

“Whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) got up at night, he used to clean his mouth with Siwak.” In another hadith narrated by Abu Huraira stated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said if it was not to be hard on his followers he would order his followers to brush their teeth with siwak in every prayer.

  1. Snuff Water Three Times

Abu Huraira narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said when one of you wakes up from sleep and performs wudu, he should snuff water three times. For indeed satan has stayed in the upper part of his nose all night.

  1. Wash Your Hands Three Times

Abu Huraira said: "When anyone amongst you wakes up from sleep, he must not put his hand in the utensil till he has washed it three times, for he does not know where his hand was during the night." [Muslim (278a)]

  1. Pray Sunnah Of Fajr And Fajr

When you wake up to pray Fajr, you should wake up your family members,  they will complain or resist sometimes. Do not give up, keep persisting. As mentioned earlier they have three knots at the back of their heads and shaytan is whispering to them. It is challenging at the beginning but once they get used to waking up and pray Fajr it will become easier and they will wake up to pray Fajr by themselves.

It was narrated by Aisha the wife of the Prophet (ﷺ) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) never missed two rakat before the Fajr prayer and he will lie down on his right side after the sunnah prayer. Another Hadith narrated by Aisha "The Prophet (ﷺ) used to offer two light rakat between the Adhan and the Iqama of the Fajr prayer." [Bukhari (619)]

Narrated Abu Bakr bin Abi Musa: My father said, "Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)  said, 'Whoever prays the two cool prayers (Asr and Fajr) will go to Paradise.' "  [Bukhari (574)]

  1. Read The Quran

Narrated Abu Salama bin Abdur Rahman:

Abu Huraira said, "I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)  saying, 'The reward of a prayer in congregation is twenty five times greater than that of a prayer offered by a person alone. The angels of the night and the angels of the day gather at the time of Fajr prayer.' Abu Huraira then added, "Recite the Holy Book if you wish, for 'Indeed, the recitation of the Quran in the early dawn (Fajr prayer) is ever witnessed.'(17:78)." [Bukhari (648)]

  1. Make The Morning Adhkar

Do the morning Adhkar; you can find it in Hisnul Muslim book chapter 27; after the dawn prayer, sit on your prayer mat and do the Adhkar before getting up. It takes at least 5 to 10 min. If you have to leave early, do the Adhkar on your commute. In the evening do not forget to do the evening Adhkar as well.

Benefits Of Doing The Adhkar:

  • Get protection and rewards for both this world and the Hereafter.
  • Increase inner peace, joy and happiness
  • Sins being forgiven
  • Increase productivity
