Etiquette Of Eating And Drinking
كُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا مِن رِّزْقِ اللَّهِ وَلَا تَعْثَوْا فِي الْأَرْضِ مُفْسِدِينَ
“Eat and drink from the provision of Allah, and do not corrupt the earth with disobedience.” (Quran 2:60)
فَكُلُوا مِمَّا رَزَقَكُمُ اللَّهُ حَلَالًا طَيِّبًا وَاشْكُرُوا نِعْمَتَ اللَّهِ إِن كُنتُمْ إِيَّاهُ تَعْبُدُونَ
“Then eat of what Allah has provided for you (which is) lawful and good. And be grateful for the favor of Allah, if it is (indeed) Him that you worship.” (Quran 16:114)
Etiquettes Of Eating
Jabir Ibn. Abdullah reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:
When a person enters his house and mentions the name of Allah at the time of entering it and while eating the food, Satan says (addressing himself: You have no place to spend the night and no evening meal; but when he enters without mentioning the name of Allah, the Satan says: You have found a place to spend the night, and when he does not mention the name of Allah while eating food, he (the Satan) says: You have found a place to spend the night and evening meal. (Muslim)
Narrated Umar bin Abi Salama:
“I was a boy under the care of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and my hand used to go around the dish while I was eating. So, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said to me, ‘O boy! Mention the Name of Allah and eat with your right hand and eat of the dish what is nearer to you.’ Since then, I have applied those instructions when eating (Bukhari)
Narrated Aisha:
The Prophet (ﷺ) used to love to start doing things from the right side whenever possible, in performing ablution, putting on his shoes, and combing his hair. (Al-Ash'ath said: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to do so in all his affairs.) (Bukhari)
Pronounce The Tasmiyah Before Eating
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ
“In the name of Allah”
if you forget to say the Tasmiyah, then you should say:
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ فِي أَوَّلِهِ وَآخِرِهِ
“In the name of Allah, in the beginning and in the end”
It was narrated that Aishah said:
“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was eating food with six of his Companions when a Bedouin came and ate it all in two bites. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘If he had said Bismillah, it would have sufficed you (all). When any one of you eats food, let him say Bismillah, and if he forgets to say Bismillah at the beginning, let him say Bismillah fi awwalihi wa akhirih (In the Name of Allah at the beginning and at the end).’” (Sunan Ibn Majah)
It Is Recommended To Wash One’s Hands Before And After A Meal
Eat With The Right Hand
Ibn Umar reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:
“When any one of you intends to eat (meal), he should eat with his right hand. and when he (intends) to drink he should drink with his right hand, for Satan eats with his left hand and drinks with his left hand.” (Muslim)
Eat From What Is In Nearest To You
Narrated Umar bin Al Salama:
Who was the son of Umm Salama, the wife of the Prophet: Once I ate a meal with Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and I was eating from all sides of the dish. So, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said to me, "Eat of the dish what is nearer to you." (Bukhari)
If A Morsel Of Food Drops, Clean It And Then Eat It
Jabir reported:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "When a morsel of any of you falls, he should pick it up and remove any of the dirt on it and then eat it and should not leave it for Satan nor should wipe his hand with towel until he has licked his fingers, for he does not know in what portion of the food the blessing lies." (Muslim)
Eat With Three Fingers And Lick One’s Fingers After Eating
Ka'b bin Malik (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
I saw Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) eating with three fingers (i.e., the thumb, the index finger and the middle finger) and licking them after having finished the food. (Muslim)
It was narrated from Ibn Abbas that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“When one of you eats food, let him not wipe his hand until he has licked it or has someone else to lick it.” (Sunan Ibn Majah)
Eating As A Group
Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "The food for two persons is sufficient for three, and the food of three persons is sufficient for four persons." (Bukhari)
It Is Forbidden To Eat Or Drink From An Utensil Made From Gold Or Silver
Narrated Hudhaifa reported that he heard the Prophet (ﷺ)
“Do not wear silk or Deebaj (a kind of silk), do not drink from silver and gold vessels, and do not eat in plates of such metals, for such things are for the disbelievers in this worldly life and for us in the Hereafter.” (Bukhari)
Do Not Criticize The Food
Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet (ﷺ) never criticized any food (he was invited to), but he used to eat if he liked the food and leave it if he disliked it. (Bukhari)
Praise Allah After A Meal
Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Allah will be pleased with His slave who praises Him (i.e., says Al-hamdulillah) when he eats and praises Him when he drinks". (Muslim)
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ حَمْدًا كَثِيرًا طَيِّبًا مُبَارَكًا غَيْرَ مَكْفِيٍّ وَلاَ مُوَدَّعٍ وَلاَ مُسْتَغْنًى عَنْهُ رَبَّنَا
"Praise is to Allah, abundant good and blessed praise, a never-ending praise, a praise that we will never bid farewell to and an indispensable praise, He is our Lord"

Pronounce The Tasmiyah Before Drinking
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ

Drink With The Right Hand
Ibn Umar reported the Prophet(ﷺ) as sayings:
When any of you eats, he should eat with his right hand, and when he drinks, he should drink with his right hand, for the devil eats with his left hand and drinks with his left hand. (Sunan Abi Dawud)
It Is Disliked To Breathe Into A Drinking Container, Pause Three Times For You To Breathe
Anas reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to breathe three times in the course of a drink (i. e. he drank in three gulps). (Muslim)
The Person Serving The Drink Should Be The Last To Drink
Abu Qatadah reported:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "He who serves others with drinking water should be the last to drink himself." (At-Tirmidhi)
Prohibited To Drink From Silver And Gold Utensils
Narrated Hudhaifa:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Do not drink in gold or silver utensils, and do not wear clothes of silk or Dibaj, for these things are for them (unbelievers) in this world and for you in the Hereafter." (Bukhari)
It Is Allow To Sit Or Stand While Drinking
Amr bin Shu'aib on the authority of his father and grandfather reported:
I saw Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) drink standing or sitting. (Tirmidhi) (Muslim)
Say Tahmeed After Drinking
Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Allah will be pleased with His slave who praises Him (i.e., says Al-hamdulillah) when he eats and praises Him when he drinks". (Muslim)
Allah commands us to eat and drink what is lawful (Halal) and stay away from what is unlawful (Haram). Do not take advantage of what you have. There are so many people who do not have food to eat, water to drink or a place to live. Alway be grateful and thank your creator for all the blessings. Alhamdulillah
